Starting Something New When You Don’t ‘Feel’ Ready

I’ve recently started something new—something I’ve dreamed about but never quite felt “qualified” for: DJing, as well as continuing singing and songwriting.

I’m not an expert. I haven’t played a big paid gig. I don’t have years of experience or a fancy setup. But I’m doing it anyway.

And honestly? That’s the scariest part. The unknown. The 'not being known yet’.

🌱 Why DO WE Wait to Feel Ready

Most of us wait for a ‘sign’ before we take action and think to ourselves:

  • “I’ll do it when I’m more confident.”

  • “I’ll try get gigs once I perfect my technique”

  • “I’ll start when I’m better at it.”

We think about what people will say, or think! Which is the mot absurd part of all, because that person is probably delaying what they love to do…they might be taking it out on you through their negative comments.

The truth is, that moment of complete confidence might never come.

I’m learning: you get better by starting—not by waiting.

🎧 What MUSIC Has Taught Me (So Far)

Learning to do different forms of music and embracing a hobby/something that makes me happy; is teaching me how to:

  • Be okay with being a beginner again

  • Keep showing up even when I’m nervous

  • Separate my effort from my outcome

  • Appreciate slow progress

  • Putting in at least 5 minutes everyday keeps your mind on track and helps with confidence within yourself

Every time I mix two tracks well or build a playlist I love, or write a song I can hear like a track on Spotify, I feel something shift. Not just in my skills—but in how I see myself.

🚶🏽‍♀️Big Changes, Little Steps

I just moved to a new city. I’m on uni break. Life feels full, sometimes overwhleming, with a lot of ups and downs. Self-doubt is my biggest enemy, challenage, whatever you want to call it. There are moments I feel like I should be doing more, moving faster, proving myself, proving others.

But I take a second. Breathe.

Remind myself:
It’s okay to take it slow.

It’s okay to learn out loud.

It’s okay to grow without the pressure to be perfect.

Doing something you love can be overwhelming. Weirdly enough you stop doing it sometimes because theres so much you want to do with an idea, taking the first step feels like a far jump. But honestly just write down your idea and just chip away at it like an essay, assignment, task at work, or a recipe you are trying for the first time. And see any failures, as a step closer to suceeding.

Final ThoughtS

Starting something new is rarely comfortable.

But it’s where everything begins.

You don’t have to wait until you feel ready—you just have to start.

Here’s to the in-between. The learning. The quiet wins. The messy beginnings.
That’s where good shit happens.
